Carmen’s phone rang shortly before lunch, causing her heart to skip before she realized who it was. “Shay? What’s wrong?” Shay never called her during work hours, so just seeing Shay’s number on her caller ID caused Carmen’s stomach to twist and turn.

“Fine, everything’s fine,” Shay assured her in her bubbly voice. “What about you? Bad day?”

“You could say that,” Carmen sighed. “What’s up?”

Now it was Shay’s turn to sigh. “I need to ask you to do me a huge favor. We’re getting pulled in for an impromptu team building exercise.”

“During lunch?” Carmen scoffed. “Kind of a funny time to do it.”

“Yeah, my boss isn’t the best when it comes to things like that. Anyway, I can’t get out for my usual lunch break and I was wondering if… I know it’s a lot to ask, but…”

“Don’t worry about it,” Carmen said with a laugh, cleaning off her desk so she could leave. “I’d be happy to check on Sam. That is what you were asking, right?”

Shay’s next words were ones of relief. “Yes. Thank you so much. You have your key?”

Carmen checked her keyring and smiled. Shay had given her a copy two weeks ago on the off-chance something like this would ever happen, though she probably hadn’t planned on Carmen needing to use it so soon. “Got it right here.”

“And you’re sure this is okay? I can tell my boss to bugger off if—”

“It’s no problem at all,” Carmen assured her. “I need a break from this place anyway.”

“The office is getting to you already?” Shay asked gently. “I hear sitting by a window helps.”

Carmen glanced behind her at the very tiny window above her head. “Not when it’s the size of a cereal box.”

“Oh god, I could never work in a place like that. I need my sun.”

“Ha! I knew it. I knew you were a wallflower.” Carmen cried out.

“A wallflower who likes to play laser tag and greet folks at the door,” Shay said with a playful lilt in her voice. “Shoot. I gotta go. Thanks so much for this. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Talk to you—” Carmen never got to finish as Shay had already hung up. She never asked Shay what her boss was like, but given the way Shay acted about their surprise meeting, Carmen had a feeling they were a lot like Rob.

Still, having an excuse to leave the office was a welcomed surprise, so once Carmen was sure she had what she’d need in order to finish her work before the day was through, she locked up and headed home.
